Previous Relays
We love every Relay we do and so we had to catalogue our past ones. Here you will find some details regarding all of our previous Relays we have had here at Bury St Edmunds. This includes the location, how many participants & survivors we had and also the important monies raised figure.
Unfortunately due to a committee change just under a decade ago, we only have a few details about some of the early Relays at Bury St Edmunds. We have therefore not listed them on here as would be minimal details, however did not want you to think that we didn’t appreciate everything the previous committee/participants and survivors did to get Bury Relay to where it was when we took the helm.
To date the Bury St Edmunds Relay For Life has been running for over 15 years! In that time we have held a total of 12 Relays and has raised…

It was the year after COVID
Sadly COVID 19 Hit our world and caused everything and not just ours to unfortunately not go ahead. We were still planning and looking to go ahead but in good mind could not put all those at risk in even more risk.
We did however hold our Candle of Hope ceremony online, live at the same time on the date our Relay would have been held. Thank you to all those who tuned in, if you missed it, please feel free to watch it below.

About
It was Hot, then it was Wet, then it was Cold, Then it was very hot! was a mixed bag of weather with a wonderful mix of performers, themed laps, stalls and wonderful team themes. This was also the first year we used our very own Survivors Marquee which we bought from funds raised by the committee last year, as you can see from the photo below it looked lovely. We had a variety of acts on our stage and some in the middle or our ring performing in heat and also pouring rain, a huge thank you to all of those who volunteered their time to entertain us. We also had the most Survivors for BSE ever and raised the most money as a committee, we loved every bit of this years Relay and have only come away with a few changes for next year.
This was also the year we had a Relay For Life UK Wide First! as we had Three Global Heroes of Hope attend our Candle of Hope Ceremony, this has not happened in the UK since the Relay started and we couldn’t be happier to have been the first.

About
Well, this was probably our Hottest Relay Ever!!! it was absolutely baking, a huge round of applause to everyone who took part, in fact anyone who attended as this was a very very very hot weekend! We did however have our record number of teams this year and yet again broke the Survivor record!
We had our Xmas lap & YMCA lap back as per popular demand, but we also had a Mr Miss Relay were our lovely lads became Dames for around 30 minutes, looked lovely. Come night we lined the track with more Candle Bags that we ever dealt with before and to top it of carved a giant ‘C’ into the grass which could still be seen nearly a month later (sorry Nowton).

About
After our first Relay at Ickworth we learnt so much and one thing for sure was that we needed a different venue, Ickworth was a lovely venue and what scenery, but it was to big and we wanted something more cosy so we can all interact with each other like one big family.
So the venue was switched to Nowton Park for 2017 and WOW! What a difference, James Sheen (creator of We Love Bury St Edmunds facebook group) opened our event. We had 62 survivors – still increasing the number. The sun shone, the live stage acts played throughout Saturday, there was Zumba, there was childrens‘ time, there was bouncy castles and food stalls, a Christmas themed lap (yes we played Merry Xmas Everybody in JULY, loud!), we had several Santas walking our track, we also had a YMCA lap. There was amazing fancy dress throughout and I couldn’t even start to tell you what we saw during the ‘check ya bits’ lap!! We also found out that at least 3 people walked the entire 24 hours clocking up over 50 miles each!!! Amazing!
It was safe to say our first year in our new venue was a huge success, we also had many people telling us how much more intimate it was and how they all mixed with each other and had a wonderful time. This meant the world to us hearing this, it made the huge task of switching the Venue worth every second. As a Committee we had landed but…. still so much to learn and change and improve.

About
This was the first Relay for the current Committee that we had to organize, as you could imagine there is a lot that goes into putting on one events and the Relay is one of those with many factors. We decided as it was out first and we were familiar with the surroundings and setup that we would continue the tradition of having Ickworth House as the venue.
We overcame a considerable number of hurdles (including several created by our hosts themselves) until on a windy, drizzly weekend in September all those problems were put behind us and 49 cancer survivors (the greatest number ever for Bury St. Edmunds) set the event in motion, it was dry, it was sunny and it was wet, great 1st Relay!

This was the Previous committees last Relay and it went off with a bang, they had raised money, the most teams and the most survivors they had ever done as a committee. Unfortunately we do not have many details but a huge thank you to our wonderful predecessors.
